At the gate of the amphitheatre
The Hôtel des Arènes stands at 51 rue Monge, in the 5th arrondissement, at the entrance to the Arènes de Lutèce, the Roman amphitheatre that survives in the middle of the district. It sits between the amphitheatre and the street, which is why the hotel can offer two kinds of room: some look straight on to the arena and its park, the others on to rue Monge. The straight-line distance to the amphitheatre is about forty metres, and to place de la Contrescarpe about 220.
On the metro, Cardinal Lemoine (line 10) is three minutes away, Jussieu (lines 7 and 10) four and Place Monge (line 7) four. Atout France, the state body that awards French hotel stars, classified the hotel three stars on 5 September 2022, for 52 rooms; the hotel is independent.
Rooms and young children
The lounge and the rooms are air-conditioned. Triple rooms are sold as ideal for families, and nothing is offered above three people plus a cot. The hotel keeps baby equipment at reception, a bath, a cot and a changing mat, and provides high chairs in the breakfast room, whose decoration nods to the ancient world.
On accessibility, the hotel says it is designed to welcome guests with reduced mobility and lists access among its services, yet no adapted room is described, so we do not count one. Pets are not allowed. Instead of a bar there are machines for hot drinks and sweets, and there is no restaurant. Paying car parks stand nearby but are not attached to the hotel.
Among the rue Monge hotels

On rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, the Hôtel des Grandes Écoles has 51 rooms, one fewer than the Arènes. The Arènes de Lutèce guide describes the amphitheatre, and our list of hotels around rue Mouffetard compares the block.

Frequently asked questions
Do the rooms look on to the Arènes de Lutèce?
Some do. The hotel says certain rooms look directly on to the amphitheatre and its park, while the rest face rue Monge. Ask for the amphitheatre side when you book.
Is the Hôtel des Arènes good for families?
It is set up for young children, with triple rooms, a cot, a baby bath, a changing mat and high chairs, according to the hotel. The largest room takes three people plus a cot, so a family of four needs two rooms.
Is it accessible to wheelchair users?
The hotel claims it is designed to welcome guests with reduced mobility, but it describes no adapted room. Ask before booking.
Which metro serves it?
Cardinal Lemoine on line 10 is about three minutes away, Jussieu (lines 7 and 10) and Place Monge (line 7) four.
What are the strong and weak points of the Hôtel des Arènes?
We leave out scores and guest quotes. In the facts we checked, the amphitheatre view, the 52 rooms, the air conditioning and the baby equipment count for it; the vague wording on accessibility and the lack of a bar count against it.
