A garden hotel on rue du Cardinal-Lemoine

The Hôtel des Grandes Écoles is at 75 rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, in the 5th arrondissement, about 100 metres from place de la Contrescarpe. Atout France, the state body that issues French hotel stars, classified it three stars on 12 February 2025, for 51 rooms. Nothing on the customer pages names a brand, but the site of the Elegancia group lists the hotel among those it manages and markets, and the hotel’s careers link leads to that group.

The hotel’s pitch is its calm. Guests arrive through a tree-lined garden, and the house presents itself as a family country house in the middle of the Latin Quarter, with toile de Jouy on the walls, worn wooden furniture and patinated bronze wall lights.

Rooms and services

Rooms measure 10 to 25 m², with double or twin beds, and no triple or family room is described. There is no television, which the hotel counts among its features. Breakfast is served on a tray from 7.15 a.m. to noon; there is neither restaurant nor bar. Dogs are not allowed.

Three points need checking before booking. Air conditioning appears among the facilities without saying which rooms have it, so confirm it for yours. Parking is listed without saying whether it is private, paid or by reservation. Access for reduced mobility is stated without any adapted room being described.

Where it sits

Cardinal Lemoine (line 10) is three minutes’ walk; Place Monge (line 7) and Jussieu (lines 7 and 10) five. Place de la Contrescarpe and the top of rue Mouffetard are close, as the place de la Contrescarpe guide explains, and our page on hotels near rue Mouffetard lists the alternatives.

Among the three-stars

The Hôtel des Arènes has 52 rooms and the Hôtel Minerve 54, comparable in size. The Grandes Écoles differs from them by the garden and the absence of television, and from the Hôtel Quartier Latin, a small literary house of 29 rooms on rue des Écoles, by its size and its country style. It is not the hotel for a family of three or four.
