The criterion is the official one. We kept every hotel of our Latin Quarter base that Atout France, the state body that classifies French hotels, ranks at one or two stars: twelve of the 110. Nothing was added to reach a round number, and no hotel pays to appear. The Latin Quarter is not a cheap district, so the list is short; the next category up is covered in our guide to hotels of the 5th arrondissement.
We ordered the twelve by the walk to the nearest metro or RER station, taken from our data: one minute for the Mont-Blanc, two for the next four, three for the following six and seven for the Sunny. Stars come from the Atout France register as published on 4 October 2026. Each card shows the date of the classification, which is sometimes several years old. Every hotel was open on its own website when we checked.
A low category usually means fewer services, and we say so where the websites do. Sanitary facilities shared with other rooms, no lift, no television, no air conditioning: each is mentioned in the note of the hotel concerned.
Where they are
Around Saint-Michel and Maubert: the Mont-Blanc, the Esmeralda, the Marignan and Les Degrés de Notre Dame, all within a few minutes of line 10 and the RER B and C (line 4 is closed at Saint-Michel until 19 December 2026). For more choice in this sector, see hotels near Saint-Michel.
On the 6th-arrondissement edge: Villa des Princes, Saint-Pierre and Grand Hôtel des Balcons, between the Odéon and Cluny-La Sorbonne.
Towards the Panthéon and Luxembourg: the Du Brésil, 100 metres from the gardens, and Pierre Nicole near Port-Royal.
South, towards Mouffetard and Les Gobelins: the Familia, the Port-Royal and the Sunny.
Stairs and lifts. Several small hotels in old buildings do not state that they are accessible. Les Degrés de Notre Dame, Saint-Pierre, Villa des Princes and Pierre Nicole each write that they have no room for wheelchair users. Familia, Balcons and Sunny each mention an equipped room. Ask before booking.
Meals. Only the Mont-Blanc has a restaurant attached. Familia serves breakfast in a lounge, Villa des Princes in a vaulted room, and the Marignan includes breakfast in its rate, according to the hotel. Esmeralda’s website says nothing about breakfast.
Frequently asked questions
Which hotels are the cheapest in the Latin Quarter?
We quote no rates, so we cannot rank by price. What we can show is the official category. Three hotels hold one star (Esmeralda, Marignan, Port-Royal) and nine hold two, and these twelve are the only ones below three stars among the 110 hotels of our base. Their price band is estimated at €, the lowest of the four.
Are two-star hotels in the Latin Quarter safe and clean?
Stars measure facilities, not cleanliness or safety, and we do not publish guest ratings. Atout France grades equipment, services and accessibility against a national grid. For each hotel here we list what its own website states and what it leaves out, such as air conditioning or a lift.
Is it better to stay near Saint-Michel or near Port-Royal for a low price category?
It depends on what you want to be next to. Mont-Blanc, Esmeralda and Marignan are within a few minutes of Saint-Michel Notre-Dame and Cluny-La Sorbonne. Port-Royal and Sunny are about 1.8 km from the fountain, near Les Gobelins on metro line 7, south of the Panthéon.
Do these hotels have air conditioning?
Only some. Mont-Blanc, Villa des Princes and Saint-Pierre list it. Pierre Nicole says it has none and supplies a fan. For Familia, Du Brésil, Marignan, Les Degrés de Notre Dame (which lists heating only), Balcons, Esmeralda, Port-Royal and Sunny, the websites do not mention it, so we treat it as unconfirmed.
Do I pay the tourist tax on top of the room?
Yes. Paris adds a per-person, per-night tax, collected by the hotel: €2.60 in a one-star and €3.25 in a two-star establishment, regional surcharge included (City of Paris rates, 1 January 2026). Guests under 18 do not pay.
