A two-star on the Port-Royal side
The Hôtel Pierre Nicole is at no. 39 of the street of the same name, in the south of the 5th arrondissement, on the Port-Royal and Val-de-Grâce side. Strictly speaking it is on the edge of the Latin Quarter; our guide files it with the Sorbonne–Panthéon area by default, but the Sorbonne itself is a good walk away. Its main transport asset is the RER B station Port-Royal, 200 metres from the door.
Atout France, the national agency that grants the official stars, classified it two stars on 20 September 2023, with 33 rooms; the hotel displays the same two stars on its website. No chain or group is shown for this hotel, so we list it as independent.
Rooms for one or two, and house rules
All rooms take one or two guests; a child’s bed can be added in some of them. There is no air conditioning — the hotel says so plainly and provides a fan in each room — and the house is not equipped for wheelchair users, although it states that it has other equipment for guests with reduced mobility. A lift serves the six floors.
Breakfast is a buffet, taken in the breakfast room or in the room. There is no restaurant, no car park (the hotel points to a public one five minutes away) and animals are not accepted. Keys are old-fashioned ones, handed in at reception every time you leave, which the hotel presents as a deliberate security choice. The hotel says on its website that it furnished and decorated the rooms itself.
Port-Royal and its other hotels
The neighbourhood is that of the Cochin hospital, which the hotel mentions for guests with early appointments, and of the Val-de-Grâce, eight minutes away on foot. The Jardin du Luxembourg is about thirteen minutes away.
Two minutes away, opposite the same RER station, the three-star Hôtel Beauvoir also has fans rather than air conditioning, and a top-floor suite for three named after Hemingway. Five minutes away on boulevard Saint-Michel, the three-star Hôtel des Mines adds a bar with an open-air terrace, air conditioning, two adapted rooms and pets on request. In the two-star category, the nearest alternative is the Hôtel Sunny on boulevard de Port-Royal, about ten minutes away, which offers triples and a large room for guests with disabilities.
A step up, the four-star Hôtel Relais Saint Jacques, seven minutes away on rue de l’Abbé-de-l’Épée, has family rooms and air conditioning.
