A small four-star between Panthéon and Val-de-Grâce

The hotel stands at 3 rue de l’Abbé-de-l’Épée, near the church of Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas, on the stretch of the 5th arrondissement between the Panthéon and the Val-de-Grâce. The Val-de-Grâce is three minutes away on foot, the Panthéon eight. It is a small house: 21 rooms and one suite, 22 in all according to Atout France, the state agency that awards French hotel stars and classified it four stars on 24 February 2023.

The hotel is independent. By the hotel’s account, the building dates from 1870 and was fully renovated in 2016, and Rilke lodged here when it was a family boarding house; no heritage listing or outside source confirms either claim.

Toile de Jouy rooms and a library lounge

The hotel names the makers behind its décor. Furniture was made to measure by Les Histoires d’Alice et Cie, with fabrics by Manuel Canovas and Pierre Frey and toiles de Jouy from Toiles de Mayenne. Deluxe rooms face the Panthéon, some with a private balcony, and some bathrooms have a whirlpool bath — the only wellness feature, as there is no spa.

For families, a single booking can cover two communicating Superior rooms, for up to six people, or the Chenonceau suite, for up to four. Each room has individually controlled reversible air conditioning, and one is listed as accessible to guests with disabilities. There is no restaurant, but room service, with French dishes, runs day and night. Downstairs, the library lounge has close to 200 books, a piano and an honesty bar. Drivers are pointed to the public Soufflot-Panthéon car park.

Four-star neighbours between Panthéon and Luxembourg

Several four-stars lie within six minutes. Three minutes away on rue Gay-Lussac, the Hôtel Les Rives Oceanik has 29 rooms with French oak parquet and a two-bedroom family suite. Five minutes away, in a cul-de-sac, the Hôtel Les Jardins du Luxembourg has 19 rooms, a staffed bar lounge and a 45 m² apartment for five. On the place du Panthéon, six minutes away, the Hôtel Les Dames du Panthéon dedicates each floor to famous women and serves drinks under a glass roof facing the monument’s columns. The Hôtel Observatoire Luxembourg, four minutes away on boulevard Saint-Michel, is the only one of these with a restaurant, Le Luco.

At two stars, the Hôtel Pierre Nicole, seven minutes away near RER Port-Royal, has rooms for one or two guests.

Frequently asked questions

Relais Saint Jacques: what are the facts?

The Relais Saint Jacques receives no score from us and we quote no guest reviews. Verifiable in its favour are 22 rooms, Panthéon-view Deluxe rooms, a family room for six and 24-hour room service; against it are the lack of a restaurant and of any metro line close by — only the RER B.

Do rooms at the Relais Saint Jacques look onto the Panthéon?

The Deluxe category is sold with a Panthéon view, and some rooms on that side have a private balcony. Other categories carry no such promise.

Is the Relais Saint Jacques suitable for a family?

Yes. Its family room combines two communicating Superior rooms and sleeps up to six; the Chenonceau suite takes up to four.

Which station is nearest to the Relais Saint Jacques?

Luxembourg, on the RER B, 450 metres or five minutes on foot; Port-Royal, on the same line, is 650 metres away. No metro station appears within that distance.

Where can I park near rue de l’Abbé-de-l’Épée?

The hotel has no car park of its own and mentions the public Soufflot-Panthéon car park, which it does not operate.

Is there a bar at the hotel?

Not a staffed one. The library lounge has an honesty bar open around the clock, and room service runs 24 hours a day.
