On rue Gay-Lussac, towards the Val-de-Grâce

The André Latin stands at 50-52 rue Gay-Lussac, in the 5th arrondissement, in the area between the Val-de-Grâce and rue d’Ulm. The Panthéon is about 450 metres away. Atout France, the state body that issues French hotel stars, classified it three stars on 28 July 2022, for 68 rooms; the hotel’s own site says 69, and we use the official figure.

It is independent. The name recalls André, a nineteenth-century dandy to whom, the hotel says, its “dandy” universe pays tribute. It also says all rooms were renovated in 2020.

Rooms and services

Two rooms are adapted for reduced mobility, according to its FAQ, and family rooms of 18 to 21 m² take up to four. Air conditioning is programmable in every room. Dogs are accepted for a nightly fee.

The coffee shop, with tweed sofas, marble bistro tables and Art Deco mirrors, serves coffee from the roaster Lomi and teas from Collection T; it is sometimes called the André Latin bar, but the site mentions no alcohol, so we do not list a bar. A concept store of young designers is open to non-residents, and a turntable and a room for hire complete the offer. There is no restaurant, and the hotel has no car park; it names the Indigo Soufflot car park for information.

Getting around

The station question is the weak point. Luxembourg (RER B) is six minutes’ walk and Port Royal (RER B) eight; no metro line is near. The Panthéon guide and the page on hotels near the Panthéon cover the walk north.

Among the three-stars of the sector

Two other three-stars stand on boulevard Saint-Michel. The Hôtel de Suez has 48 rooms and is three minutes from Cluny-La Sorbonne (line 10); the Hôtel des Mines has 49, with a bar and two accessible rooms, and is five minutes from the RER B. At 68 rooms the André Latin is the largest of the three and the only one with a coffee shop and a concept store. Its nearest station, six minutes away, is also the farthest of the three.
