Rue des Écoles, near Cardinal Lemoine

The Hôtel Familia is at 11 rue des Écoles, in the 5th arrondissement, in the sector of Cardinal Lemoine and Jussieu. We file it with the Mouffetard hotels as a borderline address: the Arènes de Lutèce are about 300 metres away and place Maubert about 350. The nearest station is Cardinal Lemoine on line 10, with Jussieu and Maubert-Mutualité a little further.

Atout France, the state body that awards French hotel stars, classified it two stars on 15 January 2025, for 30 rooms. The hotel is independent and shows no chain.

Frescoes and balconies

The Familia’s distinguishing feature is its decoration. The hotel dates its building to 1865, in the Haussmann style, with balconies on the second, fifth and sixth floors, and no heritage record we consulted confirms it, so it stays the hotel’s claim. Many walls and rooms carry sepia frescoes of Paris monuments, painted, according to the hotel, by an artist trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. Eight rooms have a balcony with a table and chairs, some of them with a view of Notre-Dame, and others have exposed beams or a canopy bed.

The list of facilities is short. The hotel names wifi, a shower or bath, cable TV, a hair dryer and double glazing, but does not mention air conditioning, and a room for guests with reduced mobility appears only as a line in the footer of the website. Triple rooms are offered; nothing takes four. There is no restaurant and no bar, breakfast is served in a lounge, and a conference room takes two to fifty people. Pets and parking are not mentioned.

Among the rue des Écoles hotels

Rue des Écoles has several hotels within a few doors of each other. The Hôtel Quartier Latin, 29 rooms at no. 9, and the Hôtel Minerve, 54 rooms at no. 13, are three-stars; the Paris Art Hotel, 35 rooms at no. 1, is another. The Hôtel des Grandes Écoles, 51 rooms on rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, is larger. For the arena and its park, the Arènes de Lutèce guide covers the walk, and our list of hotels around rue Mouffetard compares the block.
