A one-star kept in the family

Hôtel Port-Royal is at no. 8 boulevard de Port-Royal, on the side of the boulevard that falls in the 5th arrondissement, near Les Gobelins metro station. France grades hotels from one to five stars through Atout France, a state tourism agency, and Port-Royal has held one star since January 2024. Only two other hotels in our Latin Quarter database share that rating — Hôtel Marignan and Hôtel Esmeralda — and both are smaller.

The website calls the hotel independent and says the same family has run it for four generations; we have no second source for the generations.

Two kinds of room, and what the site leaves out

There are two categories. Rooms with a private bathroom sit alongside “economy” rooms equipped with a washbasin, whose guests use shared showers that work with tokens. None of the rooms has a television; the hotel presents this as a deliberate choice in favour of quiet. The building has a lift.

Breakfast is a continental self-service spread. The dining room stays available from noon to 10 p.m., and guests may eat there meals they have ordered from outside. On air conditioning, rooms for guests with reduced mobility, pets and family rooms, the website says nothing we could read: its FAQ loads in a format we could not open, and the “Rooms” link in its menu returned an error when we checked on 4 October 2026.

Gobelins on foot, and the neighbours

The nearest station is Les Gobelins on line 7: the hotel says 100 metres, and our estimate from its coordinates is about 250 metres, or three minutes. Censier-Daubenton, also on line 7, takes about six minutes. The Église Saint-Médard is some five minutes away, and the hotel points guests towards rue Mouffetard; the Val-de-Grâce is about thirteen minutes on foot.

The contrast with the house next door is sharp. Hôtel Garance, fifty metres away, is a three-star with 21 rooms, all air-conditioned. For another low-cost option nearby, Hôtel Sunny, a two-star about 350 metres away, lists family rooms and rooms for guests with reduced mobility — two things Port-Royal’s website does not document.

Frequently asked questions

What is our review of Hôtel Port-Royal — who should think twice?

Anyone who needs air conditioning, a step-free room or a room for a family should check directly, because the website is silent on all three. Guests who dislike shared bathrooms should book a room with private facilities rather than an economy room.

Do all rooms at Hôtel Port-Royal have their own bathroom?

No. One category has a private bathroom; the economy rooms have only a washbasin, and their occupants use shared showers paid for with tokens.

Is breakfast served?

Yes, a continental self-service breakfast, charged separately. The dining room can also be used from noon to 10 p.m. to eat meals ordered from outside.

Does Hôtel Port-Royal have a television in the rooms?

No. The hotel says it chose to have none, “the choice of calm and tranquillity”.

Which metro station is nearest to Hôtel Port-Royal?

Les Gobelins, on line 7. The hotel says 100 metres; from its coordinates we estimate about 250 metres, three minutes. Censier-Daubenton, also on line 7, is about six minutes.
