Rue Pascal and the Dumas theme

The Hôtel Monte Cristo occupies nos. 20-22 rue Pascal, near the lower end of rue Mouffetard in the south of the 5th arrondissement, roughly halfway between the Censier-Daubenton and Les Gobelins metro stations. Atout France, the agency that awards France’s official hotel stars, classified it four stars on 31 May 2023, with 50 rooms.

The hotel belongs to the Hôteliers Impertinents collection.

Its theme is Alexandre Dumas. The hotel calls itself an updated version of the writer’s house, and four suites carry the names of Dumas and his characters: Alexandre, Edmond, Haydée and Mercedes. The website also describes it as a romantic hotel with a pool, and none of its rooms takes more than two guests.

Pool, sauna, table and bar

The facilities are what set rue Pascal’s four-star apart. The 15-metre indoor pool sits in a setting of exotic plants, with a sauna for six facing it. A 45-minute session is included with each night, by reservation, and massages can be booked in the room. When we checked on 4 October 2026, the website still carried a notice that the pool was closed for work; we could not confirm that it is open.

Le Grand Dictionnaire, the restaurant, serves dinner from Tuesday to Saturday under chef Khelil Morin. Bar 1802 specialises in rum and cocktails and welcomes outside guests in the afternoon and evening. All rooms are air-conditioned. There is no private parking, and nothing is said about pets or about rooms adapted for wheelchair users.

The Mouffetard area and its other hotels

The church of Saint-Médard, at the foot of rue Mouffetard, is about four minutes on foot. Two line 7 stations serve the hotel: Censier-Daubenton, 400 metres away, and Les Gobelins, 450 metres away.

Fifty metres away, at no. 15, the Hôtel de l’Espérance is the other four-star of rue Pascal: 38 rooms, 1970s-inspired décor, a patio under a veranda and a family triple, but no pool. On rue Berthollet, four to six minutes away, the Seven Hotel Paris offers seven themed suites and massages by appointment, without a pool, and the Serotel Lutèce a garden and family rooms for up to six. Of these four four-star hotels, the Monte Cristo is the only one with a pool, a restaurant and a bar.

For a three-star in the same Mouffetard area, the Hôtel Saint-Christophe on rue Lacépède is a minute from Place Monge, another station on line 7.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Hotel Monte Cristo do well, and less well?

The Monte Cristo gets no score from us and we do not reproduce guest reviews. On the record, rue Pascal’s four-star stands out for a 15-metre pool, a sauna, a restaurant and a rum bar; it falls short for families, with two guests at most per room, and for drivers, with no car park of its own.

Is the pool at the Hôtel Monte Cristo open?

On 4 October 2026 the hotel’s website still displayed a notice that the pool was closed for work. We have not been able to confirm that it is open, so it is worth asking the hotel before booking for the pool.

How does access to the pool and sauna work?

Each night includes a 45-minute session in the pool and sauna, booked in advance; the slots listed were 8 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. when we checked. Massages are given in the room between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Can a family of three stay in one room at the Monte Cristo?

No. The hotel caps every room at two guests and lists no family room. Its neighbour at 15 rue Pascal, the Hôtel de l’Espérance, has a family triple.

Can I go to Bar 1802 without staying at the hotel?

Yes. The hotel states that Bar 1802 is open to non-residents, from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. according to the times listed when we checked.
