A bourgeois house on rue Monge
Hotel Monge is at 55 rue Monge, in the 5th arrondissement, near the Arènes de Lutèce. Atout France, the state body that awards French hotel stars, last classified it four stars on 28 July 2026, for 30 rooms. It is independent, with no chain name. The hotel describes a 19th-century bourgeois house that was once a family home favoured by artists of the Left Bank; no heritage record backs that, so read it as the hotel’s account.
Three stations are within four minutes: Cardinal Lemoine on line 10, Place Monge on line 7 and Jussieu on lines 7 and 10. That gives access to both lines without a change, and puts the Arènes de Lutèce about 50 m away and the Jardin des Plantes about 700 m.
Decor, rooms and wellness
The hotel presents a literary decor. Marie-Agnès Louboutin and Patrice Henry designed connecting salons with herringbone parquet, a Carrara marble fireplace and tropical wallpapers from Maison Deyrolle, a nod to literary Paris and the botanical garden. Several Superior rooms face the Arènes or the rooftops, according to the hotel; “several” is the word to hold on to, because the view is not promised for every room.
The wellness area is a hammam scented with eucalyptus, free for all guests and bookable for private sessions of 45 minutes between 9 am and 8 pm. A massage room is run with a partner, and facials and sports coaching are offered on reservation. Air conditioning is individual in every category. Two Deluxe rooms are accessible for reduced mobility, and the largest room is a Deluxe Triple, so a party of four needs two rooms. Pets are not accepted. There is no restaurant; an honesty bar runs from 6 pm to midnight, a tea room operates, and room service goes through Deliveroo. A coworking space is reserved for guests.
Against the neighbours
On rue Monge itself, the Hôtel des Arènes is a three-star with 52 rooms. Among four-stars, the Hôtel Monte-Cristo, about 1 km on foot, has 50 rooms and lists a spa too, while the Hôtel de l’Espérance, also about 1 km away, has 38. Of these three four-stars, Monge is the smallest, with 30. Our guide to the hotels around rue Mouffetard compares them in full.
