Two names, one three-star on rue Gay-Lussac

The hotel calls itself Hôtel Elysa; the Atout France register calls it Elysa-Luxembourg. It stands at 6 rue Gay-Lussac, about 50 metres from the gates of the Jardin du Luxembourg, on the 5th-arrondissement side of the garden — the Latin Quarter proper, rather than the 6th. On our walking estimates, rue Soufflot is two minutes away, the Sorbonne five and the Panthéon six.

Atout France, the national body that grants hotel stars in France, classified it three stars on 4 February 2022, for 32 rooms. The hotel says its stone building has six storeys and dates from 1876, on the corner of boulevard Saint-Michel. It is independent, with no chain behind it.

From the adapted room to the family room

The rooms are air-conditioned. Deluxe rooms sleep three, and the family room joins a Classic and a Deluxe — 36 m², two bathrooms, up to five guests. A 22 m² room with an adapted bathroom is set aside for guests with reduced mobility. The “Balcony” category opens onto a balcony over the rooftops, and some rooms have a painted fresco or a wrought-iron balcony.

The hotel is candid about one drawback: in some rooms the toilet is separate from the bathroom. There is no bar or restaurant, but tea and coffee are available at reception at any hour, and breakfast is a buffet.

Among the hotels of rue Gay-Lussac and rue Malebranche

The Elysa’s nearest three-star neighbour is the Hôtel Madeleine de Senlis on rue Malebranche, two minutes away, which adds a heated indoor pool under stone vaults and a planted patio, but no room adapted for wheelchairs and no pets. Four minutes away on rue Cujas, French Theory, also a three-star, has a natural wine bar and a recording studio. Facing the Panthéon, five minutes away, the Hôtel des Grands Hommes has rooms decorated in the Empire style.

A minute from the Elysa, the four-star Hôtel Les Jardins du Luxembourg, in the impasse Royer-Collard, has a staffed bar lounge and a 45 m² apartment for up to five.
