At the Luxembourg end of rue de Vaugirard

The Hôtel Fontaines du Luxembourg is at 4 rue de Vaugirard, in the 6th arrondissement, on the fringe of the Latin Quarter. The street runs towards the Luxembourg palace and the Luxembourg garden is about 100 metres off. Odéon (lines 4 and 10) is five minutes on foot, Cluny–La Sorbonne (line 10) and Luxembourg (RER B) six. Atout France, the state body that issues French hotel stars, classified it three stars on 17 May 2022, for 30 rooms.

The house is independent. Its brand is listed as none, and no group appears on its legal notice.

Decor, rooms and services

The decor is baroque, in designer fabrics, with a theme drawn from Paris’s fountains: behind the beds, a giant reproduction of a fountain or a fresco of the garden. Every room is air-conditioned, with individual control in summer. Two rooms on the ground floor are for reduced mobility, with a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, a walk-in shower with a seat and grab bars. Communicating rooms take four people. A patio doubles as the smoking area. Breakfast is a buffet; there is no restaurant, and pets are not admitted.

The hotel says the building housed the king’s grooms in the 17th century and that some walls in the breakfast room date from the 12th. We found no heritage record at this address to confirm either, so they stay the hotel’s claims.

Among its neighbours

The street has larger hotels. The Hôtel Le Sénat, at number 10, has four stars and 41 rooms, with pets accepted on request, and the Hôtel Trianon Rive Gauche, four stars with 110 rooms, is a few doors away at number 1 bis. The Fontaines is a star lower and a fraction of the Trianon’s size. Le Clos Médicis, on rue Monsieur-le-Prince, is also three stars, with 38 rooms and a lounge bar. See the full set in our guide to the hotels around Odéon.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Hôtel Fontaines du Luxembourg?

At 4 rue de Vaugirard, in the 6th arrondissement, before the Luxembourg palace; the garden is about 100 metres off. Odéon (lines 4 and 10) is five minutes’ walk, Cluny–La Sorbonne (line 10) and Luxembourg (RER B) six.

Does the Hôtel Fontaines du Luxembourg have a restaurant?

No. A breakfast buffet is served, and the lounge has a bar the hotel calls “open day and night”, without saying whether staff serve it.

Is it a good hotel for families or guests with reduced mobility?

Communicating rooms take four people, and two rooms on the ground floor have a wheelchair-accessible bathroom with a walk-in shower, a seat and grab bars.

What does a Fontaines du Luxembourg review come down to?

On checked facts: the position by the garden, the decor and the adapted rooms weigh for it; the lack of a restaurant and the hotel’s unconfirmed history weigh against it.
