An ILO Collection hotel near place Maubert
The Oratio is at no. 42 rue des Bernardins, in the Maubert part of the 5th arrondissement; place Maubert itself is about three minutes away on foot. Atout France, the body that grants official star ratings in France, classified it three stars on 22 June 2022, for 39 rooms. Its own FAQ speaks of a hotel “in Saint-Germain”; the address is in the Latin Quarter.
It belongs to ILO Collection, a group with five Paris hotels — the others are La Vallée Blanche, Maison Pigalle, Le Citizen and Rendez-Vous Batignolles — as well as Gonflé bakeries and restaurants.
Thirty-nine orators, thirty-nine rooms
The idea behind the décor is local. The hotel has portrayed 39 people of the neighbourhood, whom it calls “orators” — Wali from La Route du Thé, Isabelle from the Maison Isabelle bakery among them — and echoes them in its 39 rooms. The palette is pastel, taken from the nearby gardens, and the hotel itself invokes Wes Anderson.
Every room is air-conditioned. The Comfort rooms can be combined as communicating rooms, the FAQ mentions a communicating family room, and some rooms are specially fitted for guests with disabilities or reduced mobility. The Superior rooms have a balcony facing the neighbouring church and the Maison de la Mutualité; some others look onto an interior patio. The hotel lists what it does not provide: no extra beds, no bathtubs, no minibar, no spa, no gym.
Breakfast, from 7 to 10.30 a.m., is served in a vaulted room with Gonflé breads and pastries. A coworking space opens to guests from 2 p.m. Drinks come from an honesty bar stocked with Champagne Taittinger and soft drinks. Pets are not accepted, and there is no car park; the hotel names the public car parks Lagrange-Maubert and Maubert-Collège des Bernardins.
Three-stars and four-stars around it
Line 10 stops at Maubert-Mutualité, 250 metres away, and Cardinal Lemoine, 350; Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, for the RER B and C, is about nine minutes on foot; its line 4 stop is closed until 19 December 2026. Place Maubert is three minutes away, the Collège de France four, the Panthéon six.
The two nearest three-star hotels stand about two minutes away. The Hôtel Abbatial Saint-Germain, on the boulevard, has 44 rooms for one or two guests and a gym in its cellar; the Hôtel WYLD Saint Germain, on rue des Écoles, 45 rooms and balconies on its top floor. At 39 rooms, the Oratio is the smallest of the three. Further along the same street, at no. 50, the four-star Hôtel Résidence Henri IV has only 13 rooms, all with a kitchenette, and a hammam.
