A Malone four-star off place Maubert

Hôtel des Carmes occupies no. 5 rue des Carmes, about 150 metres from place Maubert in the 5th arrondissement. It trades as “Hôtel des Carmes by Malone”, part of the Malone Hotels collection, which has addresses in Paris and Geneva. Atout France, which awards France’s official hotel stars, placed it in the four-star category on 27 February 2024; the register, the hotel’s website and OpenStreetMap all agree on 29 rooms.

Rooms, wellness and service

The interiors are by Studio CMPS. The Junior Suites come with a balcony, and the hotel describes their outlook over the rooftops toward the Panthéon and Notre-Dame; elsewhere it promises views only for “some” rooms. Families can take two communicating rooms, a Classique and a Standard behind a shared entrance, for four people. One Classique room is adapted for reduced mobility. The rooms have independent temperature control, but the site never uses the words air conditioning.

The wellness area is private by design: a hammam and a sauna booked in half-hour slots from 10 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., reached by lift in a bathrobe. Massages and facial or body treatments take place in the room, through Paris Premium Massage. Meals are limited to room service; there is no restaurant and no bar is mentioned. The hotel publishes a “Romance” package with champagne and rose petals, and offers breakfast to guests who book directly on its website. Pets and parking are not covered on the site.

The four-star cluster on rue des Écoles

The Collège de France and place Maubert are both about two minutes away; the Sorbonne, the Musée de Cluny and the Panthéon are each about six.

Five other four-stars stand within a minute’s walk: La Lanterne & Spa by Timhotel (42 rooms, heated indoor pool), the Hôtel & Spa Saint-Jacques (35 rooms, spa and bar), Les Bulles de Paris (44 rooms, champagne bar, private hammam and sauna), the Hôtel Atmosphères (56 rooms, sauna and gym free for guests) and Villa Panthéon (59 rooms). With 29 rooms, des Carmes is the smallest of the six; it has no pool and no bar, but its wellness area is booked privately. For a three-star a minute away, see the Hôtel Claude Bernard Saint-Germain; the Hôtel de Notre Dame on rue Maître-Albert is three minutes on foot.

Frequently asked questions

What does Hôtel des Carmes do well, and what not?

No stars of our own and no borrowed guest comments here, just the record. It does well on a private-use hammam and sauna, balconied Junior Suites with rooftop views and a room adapted for reduced mobility. It does not list air conditioning, a bar or a restaurant.

Is the spa at Hôtel des Carmes open to everyone at once?

No. The hammam and sauna are booked privately in 30-minute slots, between 10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Massages and facial or body treatments are given in the room.

Which rooms have a view?

The hotel presents the Junior Suites, which have balconies, with views of the rooftops, the Panthéon and Notre-Dame. For other rooms, it only says that “some” have views.

Can a family of four book together?

Yes, in two communicating rooms — a Classique and a Standard sharing a small entrance — for up to four people.

Is the hotel accessible?

One room in the Classique category is adapted for guests with reduced mobility.
