Rue Gît-le-Cœur, a minute from Saint-Michel

The Relais Hôtel du Vieux Paris is at 9 rue Gît-le-Cœur, a lane in the Saint-André-des-Arts block that the data places on the 6th arrondissement fringe, on the border between the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain, roughly 100 metres from place Saint-Michel. Atout France classified it four stars on 22 February 2023, for 19 rooms: twelve rooms and seven suites. Saint-Michel Notre-Dame (line 4, RER B and C) is a one-minute walk, Odéon four and Cluny–La Sorbonne five. The hotel is independent.

The Beat Hotel

The literary past is tied to this address. According to Wikipedia’s article on the Beat Hotel, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Gregory Corso and William Burroughs stayed here from 1956-1957, and Burroughs completed Naked Lunch in the house. The old hotel closed in 1963, and a plaque now recalls those years. The present four-star was classified much later, in 2023, and nothing in our data says what link its rooms keep with that period; exposed beams are the only decor the hotel describes.

The hotel dates its building to 1480 and says it passed through noble families. No heritage record we consulted confirms this, so it remains the hotel’s account.

Rooms and services

Rooms and suites have exposed beams, with individual air conditioning and heating. The family suite has a mezzanine and sleeps two adults and two children, with a view over the roofs. Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 12:00 in the dining room or in the room. There is no bar or restaurant; chauffeur transfers and a honeymoon welcome with champagne are offered on request. Relais Hôtel du Vieux Paris states that it is not accessible to guests with reduced mobility. Pets and parking are not mentioned.

Among the neighbours

With 19 rooms, the Vieux Paris sits between the 17 of the Hôtel Relais Médicis and the 30 of the Hôtel Saint-André des Arts, both also four-star; the latter lists a bar. The Villa d’Estrées has only 10 rooms and takes pets. For the other houses of the Odéon side, see the guide to the hotels around the Odéon.

On checked facts: the literary past, the one-minute walk to Saint-Michel and the small scale weigh for it; the access limits and the missing bar weigh against it.
