A lane off place Saint-Michel
Le Clos Notre-Dame is at 22 rue de l’Hirondelle, in the 6th arrondissement, about fifty metres from place Saint-Michel on its western side. It sits on the 6th-arrondissement fringe, beside Saint-Michel. Saint-Michel Notre-Dame (RER B and C; line 4 is closed there until 19 December 2026) is a minute on foot, Odéon (lines 4 and 10) four and Cluny-La Sorbonne (line 10) five; the parvis of Notre-Dame is about 400 metres away.
Access has one quirk. The lane joins place Saint-Michel by a flight of seven steps and a vaulted passage with two arches, which matters with luggage, and the hotel proposes another route on its website. Atout France, the state body that awards French hotel stars, classified the hotel three stars on 17 November 2023, for 16 rooms. It is independent and shows no chain.
The Salamander house
Nos. 20 to 22 rue de l’Hirondelle correspond to the Hôtel de la Salamandre, attributed to François I, according to the article on the street: two salamander bas-reliefs above the porch and in the courtyard, and a building remodelled from top to bottom at the end of the 18th century. The hotel adds that the house was occupied by the Duchess of Étampes, the king’s favourite. The interior follows that story: the decoration, by the interior architect Laurent Maugoust, is on the theme of the Renaissance, François I and his favourites.
Rooms are singles, twins and doubles, all air-conditioned, and there is a lounge with a library. Breakfast is served from 7.30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and a meeting space called L’Annexe takes seminars. Access for reduced mobility is listed among the facilities, with no adapted room described. There is no restaurant, bar or spa, and a car park is only “nearby”. Pets are not mentioned.
Among the neighbours
With 16 rooms it is the smallest of the three-stars around Odéon after the Hôtel Résidence des Arts, 11 rooms on rue Gît-le-Cœur. The Hôtel du Savoir has 20 rooms, the Hôtel du Lys 23, the Hôtel Le Régent 25 and the Hôtel Eugénie 28. The five-star Relais Christine has a spa. For the cathedral, the Notre-Dame guide covers the walk, and our list of hotels around Odéon compares them.
